The Blockchain Behind BMW Is Getting a Major Upgrade, and the Biggest Test Arrives Next Week
A blockchain with some unusually large customers has a date circled on the calendar. You may want to know why.
Some crypto projects spend years promising adoption. Others quietly get used while everyone watches something else. You can decide which one is more interesting.
A major upgrade is now eight days away. The network already has some familiar names using it, while its token sits far below its old peak. For you, the interesting question is simple: does the upgrade finally give the market a reason to care?

Gold's big shift (Sponsored)
Today, investors are again asking what inflation, policy shifts, and rising central-bank gold demand could mean for retirement savings.
This free guide explains why gold is back in focus, how physical gold can fit into certain retirement strategies, and what some investors are doing to prepare before the next major monetary shift.
See how investors are positioning retirement savings for the next gold move.

The Blockchain With Some Very Big Customers
VeChain (VET) was built around a fairly simple idea: put business records on a blockchain and make the history harder to alter. BMW uses its technology for digital vehicle records. LVMH uses it for product authentication. Walmart China has used it for food safety tracking.
That gives you a slightly unusual crypto story. The customer list is much bigger than the attention around the token. PwC and DNV have also been part of the ecosystem for years.
You have probably seen plenty of crypto “partnerships” that never went anywhere. This one has actual deployments behind it.
Why There Are Two Tokens
VET is the token you hold. VTHO handles network fees.
That distinction is important when you look at how businesses use the chain. Holding VET generates VTHO automatically. Companies can then pay network costs in VTHO without having to buy VET every time they need to use the blockchain.
You get a setup where the token and the cost of using the network have separate jobs. That has been part of the design since 2018.
What Happened When StarGate Arrived
VeChain launched StarGate in July 2025. The system lets VET holders lock their tokens into nodes and earn VTHO on top of the VTHO their holdings already generate. More than 15.4 billion VET was sitting in StarGate by late August.
That is a sizeable amount of supply tied up. The old rewards platform was shut down in March 2026. StarGate also asks participants to make longer commitments, so the people entering these nodes are making a very different bet from someone buying a token for a weekend trade. If you are watching the available supply, that distinction is worth keeping in mind.
September 16 Is the Date to Circle
The Interstellar upgrade is scheduled for September 16 at block height 25,902,540. Governance has already approved VIP-255. The upgrade bundles 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals into VeChainThor.
You get new cryptographic curves, transient storage, memory improvements and changes to gas and block limits. More importantly for developers, the network becomes much closer to the Ethereum environment they already know.
That could make life easier for developers who have spent years working with Ethereum tools. Wallets should also gain support for biometric and passkey authentication, while bridging and smart-contract operations become more efficient.
You have eight days before the change goes live. That gives traders plenty of time to decide whether they care.

Ethereum's upcoming upgrades keep promising to solve scalability. Do you believe the roadmap or is Ethereum's best days as an investment already behind it? |

The Token Has a Lot of Ground to Make Up
The 97% Problem
The token reached $0.281 in April 2021. It remains roughly 97% below that level. Meanwhile, the enterprise deployments continued. BMW kept using its system. LVMH kept using AURA. Walmart China kept using blockchain for food-safety tracking.
That creates an odd disconnect. You have a network that continued building through the bear market, while the token spent years getting punished alongside almost everything else in crypto.
The question now is whether the next phase can close some of that gap.
The EU Could Give It Something Bigger to Chase
VeChain partnered with Rekord in late August around EU digital product passports.
The European Union is moving toward mandatory digital product information across several industries. Manufacturers will need to provide verifiable information around areas such as product origin and environmental impact.
That gives blockchain projects a useful target. You do not need another meme narrative to create demand. A company needing compliant product records is a much more practical reason to use the technology.
VeChain already has enterprise relationships. Rekord gives it another route into the digital passport market. Now you get to see whether those pieces turn into actual deployments.
Ethereum Developers Are the Bigger Test
VIP-255 also changes the developer equation. Ethereum has spent years building the largest developer ecosystem in crypto. Developers already know its tools, wallets and programming environment.
Making VeChainThor more compatible with that stack lowers some of the friction. You still have a problem, though. Base, Arbitrum, Optimism and plenty of other networks are fighting for the same developers. They have deeper liquidity, larger ecosystems and plenty of money behind them.
So the upgrade gives VeChain a better pitch. It does not guarantee anyone will listen.
Action: Watch new smart-contract deployments after September 16. If activity starts climbing, you have evidence developers are paying attention. If activity stays flat, the upgrade may take longer to translate into demand. |

Hidden Tax Breaks (Sponsored)
Capital gains taxes may quietly reduce more of your investment returns than you realize.
But the tax code includes several strategies that may help reduce that bill.
Three often-overlooked areas include investment-related expenses, cost basis adjustments, and real estate selling costs.
When structured correctly, these deductions may help minimize taxable gains.
Because the rules can be complex, many investors work with fiduciary financial advisors to plan tax-efficient strategies.

The Bull Case Has a Few Holes
The Market Has Ignored This Story Before
VeChain has been talking about enterprise adoption for years. Crypto traders moved on. Retail attention tends to chase whatever is moving fastest. Memecoins get clicks. DeFi gets liquidity. New narratives get the headlines.
A blockchain tracking vehicle records does not exactly set Crypto Twitter on fire. That leaves VET with a problem.
A strong customer list has not been enough to lift the token anywhere close to its old high. You should not assume September 16 suddenly fixes that.
Some Traders May Already Be Early
VET has risen 18% over the past week and 65% over 30 days. That means the upgrade is no longer a secret. Traders who bought ahead of the event now have a simple decision. They can hold through the upgrade, or they can take their profit before everyone else starts doing the same thing.
Crypto has seen plenty of upgrades produce that exact trade. The date arrives. The headline hits. Early buyers sell. You need to leave room for that possibility.
Ethereum Compatibility Does Not Guarantee New Developers
Making a network easier to use is helpful. Getting developers to actually move over is harder. Ethereum already has Base, Arbitrum, Optimism and a long list of competitors. Developers can choose from networks with huge user bases, deep liquidity and established funding programs.
VeChain has a different pitch through its enterprise relationships. Whether developers care enough to follow is still an open question.
Action: Keep the position small if you trade the upgrade. A close below $0.006 on heavy volume after September 16 would be a warning that the move has lost support. |

What You Should Watch Next
The Setup Is Pretty Straightforward
You have an enterprise-focused blockchain. You have BMW, LVMH and Walmart China attached to the story. You have a staking system that has pulled billions of tokens into nodes. You also have a major protocol upgrade arriving on September 16.
Then there is the EU digital passport opportunity. That gives you several things to watch without needing another crypto narrative to appear. The harder part is getting the token to respond.
The EU Calendar Could Become the Bigger Catalyst
The digital passport rollout gives VeChain something crypto rarely has: a timetable outside the crypto market. Regulatory deadlines do not care whether Bitcoin is having a good week.
If a major brand starts using VeChain-backed digital product passports later this year, you would have a much stronger signal than another partnership announcement. That is the kind of development worth watching.
How I Would Approach It
You could build a small position before September 16 and leave yourself room to add later.
Then watch what happens after the upgrade.
Are developers actually deploying contracts? Is network activity picking up? Are enterprise customers adding new use cases? Is the EU passport strategy producing customers rather than announcements?
Those answers will tell you far more than the upgrade headline. If the network starts gaining activity, you have something to work with. If nothing changes, you have your answer too.
