The Privacy Coin That Got Delisted, Written Off, and Hit a 9-Month High Anyway

Privacy is waking up without US exchange support. One name hit a 9-month high today, and the sector catalyst that could push the whole basket higher is still 2 weeks out.

One coin spent 2 years being delisted from major US exchanges, regulated off European platforms, and written off by most of the market.

It cleared double digits in a day while Bitcoin sat flat. The catalyst that could push the whole sector higher is 2 weeks out.

What Monero Does That No Other Coin Does by Default

Monero (XMR) is the original privacy coin and still the largest by market cap.

It uses ring signatures and stealth addresses to make every transaction untraceable at the protocol level. That is not an opt-in feature: it is the base layer.

Every transaction you send gets bundled with a set of decoys pulled from the chain, so no external observer can tell which output was yours. The sender is hidden. The receiver is hidden. The amount is hidden. All of it, every time, without you doing anything extra.

The Part That Got It Delisted

Bitcoin’s ledger is permanently public. Every address, every balance, every transaction history is readable by anyone with a browser. That transparency is what makes chain analytics firms a billion-dollar industry.

Monero breaks their business model entirely, which is exactly why Binance, OKX, and Kraken delisted it in 2024 under regulatory pressure. The market treated it like a death sentence.

XMR absorbed the delisting wave, dropped, stabilized, and kept trading on peer-to-peer rails and offshore venues with a user base that was not going anywhere.

The Move Happening Right Now

XMR is up roughly 10 to 12% in 24 hours, hitting its highest level since January. Bitcoin is flat to slightly negative over the same window. The broader market is consolidating on macro data and Treasury yield pressure. Monero is doing its own thing entirely.

Over the past 7 days, XMR is up more than 16%, outpacing virtually every large-cap crypto asset. That kind of divergence from the market does not happen by accident.

Why This Move Is More Interesting Than It Looks

This run happened without a Coinbase listing. Without a Binance listing. Without any US exchange support at all. No ETF, no institutional on-ramp, no marketing cycle.

Buying is coming from offshore venues, peer-to-peer platforms, and steady accumulation through channels most US retail traders cannot easily reach.

That is the supply picture before any of the doors that closed in 2024 reopen. If even one of those doors cracks back open, the available supply to absorb demand gets considerably thinner.

Action: Before you position in XMR, figure out where you can buy and hold it. If your exchange delisted it, you need a plan before the next leg, not during it.

Would you rather Bitcoin's price fully decouple from stocks and become its own asset class, or keep moving in lockstep with tech stocks as a high-beta proxy?

Financial Outlook and Market Position

2 Things the Market Has Not Fully Priced Yet

The first is FinCEN. In early October, the US Treasury’s financial crimes unit withdrew 2 pending enforcement proposals: one from 2023 targeting international crypto mixing, and one from 2020 targeting unhosted wallet reporting.

Neither document mentioned Monero by name. They signal that the current administration is pulling back from the aggressive surveillance-and-enforcement posture of the prior 4 years. That does not mean privacy coins are suddenly welcome on US exchanges, but it does shift the direction of travel.

The Zcash Upgrade That Moves the Whole Sector

The second catalyst is Zcash’s NU7 upgrade, locked in at block 3,543,405 and expected to activate around early November. NU7 roughly triples payment speed for ZEC and is the biggest protocol change the privacy sector has seen in years.

When a high-profile upgrade hits one privacy coin, capital rotates across the category.

XMR is the more liquid name with the larger market cap, so it tends to catch that rotation before the activation event rather than after. You are watching that positioning phase right now.

What the Technical Setup Looks Like

XMR is trading above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages. RSI is elevated but not in extreme territory. The Fear and Greed Index sits at 68, solidly in Greed, tracking broader market sentiment rather than anything Monero-specific.

The more critical data point: open interest in XMR futures climbed from well under $100M to over $300M in a matter of weeks. That is a substantial leverage build. It cuts both ways.

Where XMR Stands Against Its Own History

XMR is still more than 20% below its all-time high, set in January 2026, before a brutal reversal that took the coin down more than 60% over the following weeks. The upside gap to that January peak exists.

So does the precedent for how quickly it can close and reopen. The 50-day moving average is the first level to watch on any pullback. Below that is the early October low, which is where the current run started from.

Action: Watch for XMR to hold its gains into the weekly close. A sustained close at these levels with volume confirms the move. A spike that fades back to the prior range on light volume is a different story.

Bear Case

The Leverage Picture Is the First Thing to Watch

Open interest in XMR futures going from well under $100M to over $300M in a short window is not inherently bullish. It means a large number of leveraged bets are now sitting open in the market.

When a move is built on derivatives rather than spot accumulation, the reversal can be just as fast as the run. XMR showed exactly how this works in January: the coin ran roughly 70% in about 4 days and then shed more than 60% over the next 3 weeks.

The mechanics that power a squeeze up are the same ones that power a squeeze down.

The EU Clock Is Already Ticking

From July 10, 2027, EU Regulation 2024/1624 bars regulated crypto service providers from handling accounts that allow transaction anonymisation, including privacy coins.

The rule targets service providers, not you as a holder. But it means the pool of regulated exchanges available to European users keeps shrinking between now and next summer.

Some platforms have already begun delisting XMR ahead of the deadline rather than waiting. That is a structural headwind that US regulatory softening does not fix.

Supply Without a Ceiling

Monero has a tail emission built into its protocol: 0.6 XMR per block, indefinitely. The supply never locks. That design keeps mining economically viable, and the network secure over a long time horizon, which is a genuine engineering choice.

But it means XMR carries no hard scarcity argument. You are betting on demand for financial privacy growing faster than supply, not on a fixed-cap asset appreciating through supply pressure alone. Those are different bets with different risk profiles.

The Technical Pattern Worth Knowing

The daily chart shows a potential double-top structure that formed over the last several weeks, with 2 rejected peaks at similar levels and a neckline that sits well below current prices. That pattern stays unconfirmed unless the price breaks down through the neckline with conviction. The structure is worth knowing before sizing a position, not because it is the likely outcome, but because it defines where the technical case breaks.

Action: Size this as a focused position, not an all-in trade. The setup is specific, and the catalysts are near-term, but the leverage overhang and the EU delisting timeline are not going anywhere. Know your exit before you enter.

Outlook and Investment Thesis

The Contrarian Case Is Not Complicated

A coin that lost its major US exchange listings, got regulated out of European platforms, and spent most of the last 2 years being treated as an untouchable asset is now hitting 9-month highs on volume that outpaces most of the large-cap market.

The regulatory backdrop has shifted. The sector has a high-profile catalyst landing in roughly 2 weeks. And XMR is already moving before any of that resolves. The positioning window is not after the NU7 activation. It is right now.

What to Watch Over the Next 2 Weeks

The Zcash NU7 activation is the near-term event. When ZEC’s upgrade goes live, privacy coin coverage spikes across crypto media, and capital that has been sitting in cash rotates into the sector. XMR tends to capture that rotation early because it is the more liquid and accessible name for offshore buyers.

Watch XMR volume relative to ZEC volume in the days leading up to the activation. If XMR volume is running ahead, that is the positioning flow in action. Also watch for any exchange relisting news, because even an unconfirmed rumor in this regulatory environment can move price fast.

The Question That Stays Open

FinCEN pulling back on 2 enforcement proposals is a signal, not a guarantee. The current administration’s posture on crypto enforcement is the friendliest it has been in years, and that can change.

The EU rule landing in July 2027 is written law, not a proposal.

Monero’s long-term picture depends on whether privacy demand proves durable enough on peer-to-peer rails as regulated access keeps narrowing, or whether the regulatory environment softens enough to bring major exchanges back. Neither outcome resolves in the next 2 weeks. The NU7 thesis does.
